Affiliate marketing is promoting someone else’s product in exchange for a commission.

This is what makes it such a beginner-friendly side hustle — you don’t need a product, don’t have to deal with customer support and you can start without investing any cash.

While affiliate marketing is easy for anyone to start, this doesn’t mean it’s easy to make money.

Many people quit in the first few months after not seeing any financial return.

You have to be willing to commit for the long term, always be learning and tweaking, take action every day and invest in your knowledge.

So, if you want to start affiliate marketing with no money – be willing to work!

I’m going to show you the methods I’ve used and seen others use to start affiliate marketing free.

By now you should have a general idea of what affiliate marketing is.

Now you need to get yourself organised so you can get started. You actually need very little in the beginning. Here are the basics;

1. Choose a Niche Topic

To be a successful affiliate, you need to pick a niche topic that you love or specialise in.

Becoming a master in one area is how you’ll build an audience who trusts you and buys from you.

Have a think about how you will make yourself stand out from the rest?

For example: there are millions of people talking about weight loss.

But you could differentiate yourself by talking about:

Losing belly fat for women over 50
Or muscle building for teenagers or skinny guys

These are way more specific and will get you targeted followers who need certain products.

Topics that do well in affiliate marketing are; health, wealth and relationships.

If you can help people in these areas, in your own unique niche, you will make money.

2. Make a List of Products to Promote

Next, you need to find quality products that help your audience.

It’s best if you promote products you have used yourself and know are good. Otherwise, you may end up hurting your reputation by promoting rubbish.

If you have the funds, take courses and read eBooks. If you find them useful, apply to affiliate for the product.

Other ways to find affiliate products include:

Google search. Type in ‘niche + affiliate programme’. An example is ‘hair loss affiliate programme’ or ‘weight loss women affiliate programme’
Search large affiliate platforms such as Clickbank, ShareASale, CJ Affiliate, Amazon Associates, Rakuten Marketing and many more

3. Choose a Platform to Build an Audience

To make money affiliate marketing with no money, you need an audience to promote to.

The good news is that you can use free social media platforms to get targeted followers.

If you have a large following on social media already, great! If you don’t, this is where you have to take time to work at it.

My advice is to start with one or two social platforms in the beginning. Trying to be everywhere just leads to being overwhelmed.

Here’s a quick start guide to affiliate marketing on Twitter and getting your profile set up the right way.

Set up your bio the right way
Have a clear photo of your face or quality avatar
Write a short paragraph telling people what you do and what you can do for them
Pin a successful tweet to the top of your feed for social proof
Spend time building your followers by commenting on other big accounts
Re-tweet and quote re-tweet big accounts
Make meaningful connections and talk to people
Tweet 3-5 times a day helpful, inspiring content
Once you gain an audience, start tweeting your affiliate offers

According to statistics, 70% of people go on to Pinterest to make a buying decision. This means Pinterest is a top platform to start affiliate marketing on.

You don’t need a blog to start promoting affiliate products on Pinterest. But it helps if you have a blog, getting you a higher conversion rate.

But to start affiliate marketing with no money, you can just create affiliate pins and share other people’s relevant pins.

Set up a new Pinterest business account or convert your personal account
Sign up for a free Canva account to design your pins
Decide on your target niche eg; Mom and baby, home décor, food and recipes, making money

You can shoot a video today and still get people viewing it for years to come and make money if you’ve added affiliate links.

Start making videos on your phone or with a decent laptop camera.

You can get by with free or very low costing editing software like Filmora, Shotcut, DaVinci Resolve, Apple IMovie and many more.

Here are the basics to start affiliate marketing on YouTube;

Decide on your channel niche. Some that do well are; educational, photography and tech equipment reviews, gaming, vlogging, fitness, beauty and news roundups
Choose affiliate products to promote. If you are reviewing tech gear, Amazon Associates is worth checking out. Clickbank has a ton of digital products also
Set up your YouTube channel with a professional banner image, a clear photo, bio telling people what you do and any links to your other social accounts or free lead magnet
Start creating great video content and get a regular post-schedule
Follow other accounts in your niche and comment to build your following

We are so lucky to be living in the digital age. Social media platforms have ready-made audiences just waiting to be promoted to.

But to be successful with affiliate marketing, it pays to promote your affiliate links across multiple platforms.

Email Marketing

Starting an email list is a smart way to increase your affiliate earnings.

By just promoting affiliate links, you may never see someone again after a sale.

If you offer a free lead magnet and get people onto your email list, you can promote products to them for years.

Mailchimp is an email autoresponder software with a free starter plan. You can use it up to the point you get 2,000 subscribers which is not bad.

Create a free, valuable lead magnet like a PDF guide and create an email sequence in Mailchimp. Link to this on social and collect emails.

Email your list weekly with a mix of valuable content and affiliate products you’re promoting.

Create an EBook

By creating a small eBook, you can add your affiliate links to the pages.

For example, if your eBook is about building a blog in WordPress, you can add links to products you use like paid themes, domain hosting and any courses you’ve taken.

Sell your eBook on platforms with large audiences, such as:

Amazon KDP
SmashWords
Kobo Writing Life
Your social media accounts

Earn cash from the sale of your eBook and from the affiliate links you place inside.

EBooks are great passive income streams, potentially making you money for years to come.

This has to be done with caution as each platform will have their own rules regarding affiliate marketing.

Take your time to build up your following first and connecting with other authors before you start recommending products.

As you can see, there are many ways to start affiliate marketing with no money.

Some affiliates may only ever make a few hundred pounds a month. But super affiliates who are in it for the long haul can make 10 – 100k per month.

There really is no cap on the income potential from affiliate marketing.

Remember: it takes time to start to see profits. But your daily small efforts will compound over time and could potentially make you a full-time income in the future.

Focus on creating content and building your audience in the first 6 months.

The more helpful you are, the more people will see you as an authority and someone to trust.

As an affiliate marketer, you can leverage the power of Twitter and make it another source of income.

Having said that, it does take time to get used to this micro-blogging platform. There are certain rules and etiquette to adhere to, if you want to get noticed on Twitter.

Making money from affiliate marketing on Twitter doesn’t happen overnight.

The first things you need to focus on are setting up your bio right, building an audience and spending time engaging with others.

And when you start to tweet, you have to stay within the constraints of 280 characters which does take getting used to.

Get it right and your tweet will be re-tweeted and liked, increasing your new followers.

Get it wrong and tumbleweeds will blow around your tweet with zero engagement.

But don’t panic, it takes some time to start getting engagement on your tweets. It’s a rite of passage and you need to focus on commenting and connecting with others in the beginning.

How to Set Up Your Twitter Bio the Right Way

Your Twitter bio is the first thing someone sees when they visit your profile.

It should stand out and needs to tell people why they should follow you and what you can do for them. A great Twitter account includes;

A clear profile picture. This can be either; a photo of you, a photo of an icon you admire or a custom made avatar
A quality header image. The header needs to portray what you do and look professional. Create one for free on Canva or get one made cheap on Fiverr
Optimized bio. This is where you write a short paragraph to describe what people can expect from you. It’s a good idea to have some social proof here eg; I’ve made $1,000 in the last month selling eBooks or whatever your speciality is. This section can also contain a link to your blog, a newsletter or what you’re promoting
Pinned tweet. A pinned tweet is a previous tweet you stick to the top of your feed. This is prime real estate where you can show off; a tweet that got huge engagement, any important news you have, a product you are promoting or a thread that is super helpful

Strategy to Build Your Twitter Following Fast

Now that your bio is set up correctly, you need to get into a tweeting and engagement schedule.

To be successful on Twitter, you have to show up daily and put out more content than on other platforms. The Twitter feed moves fast; your tweet will get buried pretty quickly in the beginning.

But if you’re new to Twitter, it pays to spend more time engaging on other big accounts.

Search for 20 big Twitter accounts in your niche (10k+ followers), follow them and turn notifications ‘on’ so you see every time they post a new tweet.

Spend at least 10 minutes in the morning, at lunchtime and in the evening liking and commenting on these big accounts tweets.

This gets you seen by the account owner and their followers, which are who you want to attract to follow you also. Here’s your simple daily engagement plan;

Comment on big account tweets 30 – 50 times a day. Don’t just write ‘well done’ or ‘I agree’. Remember you want people to see you as an authority also. Think of a reply that adds to the post or gives an interesting insight
Tweet 3 – 10 times a day. 3 tweets a day is enough for a new account. I schedule my tweets from 8am – 1pm and then re-tweet them after 6 hours so they go to the top of the Twitter pile
Comment re-tweet 2 – 5 times a day. Again, add something of value to the tweet and the big account may re-tweet your re-tweet. This is what you’re aiming for. If you get a re-tweet, this is more eyes on you and will get you followers
Re-tweet 2 – 5 times a day. These don’t usually get re-tweeted but are appreciated by the big accounts. Showing support to big players helps you build connections and you show up in their feed more often

Once you’ve settled into your daily engagement plan, there are more tactics you can implement to spur growth. These include;

Study large accounts. Research their bio, what they tweet about, how they engage and when they are most active. The big players are big for a reason. Model what works
Talk to people in the DMs. Reach out to big accounts and small accounts and actually have a conversation. This way you can learn from each other, offer help and you’ll start to show up in each other’s feed more
Create threads. Threads need to be of high value and have a great ‘hook’ in the title to encourage people to read. These can take time to master and a few may flop in the beginning. But eventually, threads get a higher engagement than single tweets

Join engagement groups. Help others to help yourself! You can set up your own engagement group or ask around to join one. These work by group efforts to share and engage on each other’s tweets, which is really helpful as a newbie

What to Tweet About for Maximum Engagement

What you tweet about, really depends on your niche.

But, from what I’ve seen, the 3-2-1 formula does well.

This is x3 motivational/inspirational tweets, x2 actionable tweets and x1 sales tweet.

It’s totally ok to start with x3 tweets a day though. Go for x1 motivational, x1 actionable and x1 sales if you have a product to promote. If not, double up on the motivational tweet.

Take inspiration from other big accounts by searching through their tweets and replies. Don’t copy, but re-write any tweets that did well.

You can also search for great tweet content on Instagram and Pinterest.

On Instagram, get inspiration from big business accounts like;

@thebusinesshacks
@cashtagbusiness
@salesnotepad

These are great accounts for business, motivation and money-making tips.

On Pinterest, search things like; success rules, money mantras, mindset hacks, fitness tips and money principles to find great content you can model.

How to Find Quality Affiliate Products to Promote?

To start affiliate marketing on Twitter you need to find affiliate products to promote in your niche. If you talk about fitness, don’t promote a dog bed for example, this will just confuse your audience.

I strongly suggest that you also only promote products that you know are great and have used yourself. To get people to trust and buy from you, they need to know a product has worked for you.

Once you start using Twitter, you’ll probably come across successful people promoting their courses. This is how I’ve found a few of the products I affiliate for.

If you like what this person talks about, support them by buying their course. Then you can apply to be an affiliate. Things that sell well on Twitter are digital courses and eBooks.

Ask these questions when deciding on an affiliate product;

Is the product selling and the creator well known?
Will this product offer value to my followers?
Does the cost of the product and commission rate make it worthwhile to me?
Have I bought the product and got value?
Are other affiliates making money promoting this product?

Always ask these questions when deciding what to promote. If you promote rubbish, you will hurt your reputation and lose followers.

Remember you are building a brand. Be in it for the long game, not just a quick buck.

When starting out on Twitter, I highly recommend focusing more heavily on building your account, before you start promoting.

If you haven’t got an audience, you will never sell anything!

Once you have around 3-400 followers, you can start adding a promotional tweet to your schedule. Play around with different affiliate tactics to see which works for you. Here are five I have seen used with great success;

Promotional Tweets

Try not to overload your feed just with promotions. Start with a few a week and build up to one or more a day as your following grows.

Include results in your promotional tweet if you have them. Or ask someone else who has results to see if you can use theirs.

Tag the creator of the product in your tweet which looks like; @remoteworkrebel for example. This tag gets your tweet seen by the large creator account and will usually result in a re-tweet which gets you more exposure.

A Thread with Affiliate Link in Last Tweet

As previously mentioned, threads get more engagement than the average tweet.

Aim for your thread to be at least 4 tweets and no more than 8 tweets. Start your thread with value-packed information that helps the reader.

Only add your affiliate link in the last tweet if it relates to the post and adds extra value.

So, an example could be; a thread called ‘5 ways to drive massive traffic to Twitter account’ and then link to a Twitter growth course you know is good.

Build an Email List

The best way to get your audience to trust you is to offer a free lead magnet in exchange for an email address.

Again, this has to be highly relevant to your followers and value-packed.

But once you build an email list, you can promote affiliate products for years to come. Your email list is your own and can never be taken away like a social account.

When email marketing, the aim is to put out value more than promotions. A 3-1 ratio which is x3 value emails and x1 affiliate promotion should work well.

Direct Messaging (DM)

The DMs are the place to build relationships and even make affiliate sales.

Don’t just talk to people in the hope of making a sale though. Talk like a real human, ask questions about the person and try to help with any struggles they have.

I’ve had many people reach out to me and just sell. This is not the way to make me buy something and I would think many other people are the same.

Like with anything, practice makes perfect. Have conversations and if the opportunity arises, mention a product that has helped you, which you can share your affiliate link for.

Creator Promotions

Once you’re signed up as an affiliate for a product, keep an eye out for when the product is on sale.

Often creators will put their product on sale for 24 hours or for the next 50 people for example. This creates scarcity and drives people to buy quick.

If you get in on that promotion, tweeting about it at the right time, this could put some money back in your pocket.

Offer Bonuses

A tried and tested affiliate method not just on Twitter is the ‘bonus stack’.

If you can, create one or two valuable bonuses to give away when someone buys through your link. This can increase your sales and get you seen as someone who over-delivers.

For example; if you and another affiliate are promoting the same product, but you give away a free swipe file and a free video tutorial on how to get started, you’ll probably get the sale.

Have a think about what other value you can add to a product. It doesn’t have to be huge, just a 2-page PDF or free guide for example.

Make sure it is highly relevant to the product you are promoting and valuable to the customer.

The good thing is, once you create these free lead magnets, they can be used over and over again.

Be aware that the Amazon influencer program requires you to have a blog, but the Amazon Associates program is designed for affiliates that use social media for marketing.

Yes. Anyone who takes the time to learn affiliate marketing and how to leverage Twitter can make money.

Twitter is a great place for affiliate marketing.

But, focus on building an account of value instead of just posting your links. Followers will stop following you if you just sell all day long.

Increase engagement by posting inspirational and educational content and only 1-2 sales tweets a day.

These are great ideas for your niche and there are plenty of products you could promote here.

Research your chosen niche to find products that might help people.

Step #4: Find Relevant Affiliate Programs

Choose a few affiliate products that align with your niche.

Use Google to search for relevant affiliate programs.

Type in ‘’your niche’’ + affiliate programs”, which will show you the currently available programs you can apply to.

Apply to be a part of the affiliate program. Each program will have different rules to which you’ll have to adhere to.

Remember that some will only take on affiliates with a blog.

Step #5: Design Stand Out Pins

Now you have your affiliate links, you need to create pins to promote them on.

This is probably one of the most important steps because stand-out pins will get more clicks and affiliate sales.

I use Canva which has an extremely great free version which is all you need.

You don’t need to be a graphic design expert either, Canva has tons of ready-installed free graphics, photos, stickers and videos to use.

Create pins that are tall and of 2:3 ratios. Canva makes it easy by giving you the exact preferred pin size already.

Just click on ‘create design’ and type in ‘Pinterest pin’ which is already set at 1000-1500px. You can add in custom sizing if you require.

Once you’ve created your pin, give it a name (this helps with SEO), and download it to your computer.

On Pinterest, click ‘create pin’, add your image and write the title and description.

Use the Pinterest search box to find keywords and add them to your description.

Start typing your keyword in and Pinterest will show you related keywords.

By making your pin description keyword-rich, you’re telling Pinterest what your pin is about, increasing the chances it gets seen higher up in the searches.

Make sure you declare that the pin is an affiliate pin.

You can do this by writing #affiliatelink, #aff or #promotion for example. In the link section, this is where you add your actual affiliate link.

DO NOT use a link shortener like Bitly. Use the original link.

Unlike other social platforms, Pinterest doesn’t like affiliate links to be hidden.

Step #6: Pin to a Relevant Board

Pin your new affiliate pin to the most relevant board first.

If the title is ‘best 12 baby dummies for teething’, pin this to your baby product, or tips for baby teething board.

Make at least three versions of that pin to send out every couple of days.

You can use a paid scheduler like Tailwind or you can actually schedule pins for free right in Pinterest.

Join group boards and share your pin there to get more exposure. Just make sure the group is tolerant of affiliate pins.

Tips for getting the most traffic for your pins:

Design 3+ pins for each affiliate link. This gives your affiliate pin the maximum amount of exposure. Schedule them to go out with around 2 weeks between them so Pinterest doesn’t think you’re spamming the same link.

Post your pins when your audience are most engaged. I use Tailwind which tells me when my audience is most engaged. This is extremely helpful to build your account and get more likes, shares and follows.

Only recommend courses, products or services you know are good. It’s important to be genuine when doing Pinterest affiliate marketing without a blog. If you recommend bad products, or spam, this will only hurt your reputation and not make you much money.

Pin other creators’ pins to your boards. Aim to pin a mix of your own pins and other peoples pins. This will help build your account and maybe get you more shares when you help others out as well.

Disclose you’re sharing an affiliate link. As mentioned above, use the original link and disclose that it’s an affiliate pin by adding #affiliatelink or #promotion into the pin description.

Step #7: Implement SEO Strategies

To help your target audience find you, implement SEO (search engine optimisation) strategies.

This includes optimising your Pinterest profile, boards and pins. Here’s what you need to know:

Bio and profile. This is what your follower’s ad potential buyers will look at first. Make sure you tell people what you do, your expertise and how you can help them. Optimise this area with key search terms people might use on Pinterest such as ‘best travel outfits’ for example related to your niche.

Boards. Your account should have one main niche eg; travel and an umbrella of sub-niches (boards). Examples include ‘travel outfits women’, ‘travel clothes kids’, ‘travel tips with toddlers’ and ‘travel insurance tips’. Again, you can find ideas using the Pinterest search bar.

Pins. Use keywords in the description of your pins and on your pins. This helps Pinterest to know who to show your pins to. Highly relevant pin titles also help get you clicks by the right people, who might be interested in buying what you’re promoting.

Step #8: Schedule Pins with Tailwind

Investing in Tailwind will save you so much time and stress.

Initially, I spent hours each day creating and uploading pins directly to Pinterest.

While this is free, you lose so much more time that could be spent working on other areas of your business.

Tailwind is a social media scheduler allowing you to schedule content in bulk, freeing up your time for the rest of the week.

I usually spend two hours at the start of the week creating and scheduling Pinterest pins on Tailwind. This is so much better than when I was spending two hours a day!

Check out competitors’ boards. It’s likely that your competitors are part of a few great group boards. Search their accounts for ideas.
Search Pin Groupie. Pin Groupie is a Pinterest group board directory. Skip the hard work of searching and gain access to the best group boards instantly.
Read ‘Pinterest Group Board’ blog posts. A quick Google search of ‘Pinterest Group Boards to Join’ should show you many articles with group board lists you can check out.

How to Make Money On Pinterest with A Blog?

eBooks can be a brilliant source of passive income also.

If you price your eBook affordably at $20 and get five sales a day. That’s an extra $100 a day and you may even make those sales while you’re sleeping!
